“Threave is a place where you sit quietly, and slowly realise that there is life going on all around you. Even when it’s quiet, it’s never really quiet. Something always pops up – the frog chorus round the pond in spring or a tiny goldcrest family darting from a herbaceous border – and it’s those small individual moments that stay in your mind. Every time you visit, you come away with that little golden nugget.”
David Thompson | Head Ranger for Dumfries and Galloway
The wetlands of Threave Nature Reserve provide a vital sanctuary for wintering wildfowl and support a breathtaking array of natural habitats for birdlife and wildlife. But Threave is a place of human sanctuary too. People come here to walk and explore, to spend time in the open air and reconnect to nature, and to watch Threave Garden change with the seasons. It’s a beautiful haven of tranquility in a busy world.
